Chaitra Amavasya 2026: The new-moon day of the Chaitra month is known as Chaitra Amavasya. According to the Panchang, it is the last Amavasya tithi in the Hindu calendar. It is also known as Bhootadi Amavasya in many Indian regions. The day of Amavasya is very sacred for spiritual cleansing and worship of ancestors. It is a day of charity and devotion. Chaitra Amavasya 2026: Significance

Chaitra Amavasya is a time to leave difficulties and negativity behind. People give utmost importance to worshipping Lord Vishnu and taking a sacred dip in the Ganga River. It is believed that a dip in the Ganges cleanses one of all sins and brings blessings from God. It is also extremely auspicious to do shraddha for the peace and liberation of our ancestors.

Chaitra Amavasya 2026: Rituals

On Chaitra Amavasya, devotees observe a fast for the peace of their ancestors' souls. On this sacred day, one should wake up before sunrise, take a sacred dip in the holy river, and offer water to the sun god. Devotees must also perform charity in the name of the ancestors. After observing shraddha, one should feed the poor or brahmins. In the evening, one should light a lamp of mustard oil under the poplar tree and offer blue flowers along with black sesame seeds to Lord Shani.
