In Maharashtra, the gudi is placed outside the home, and it is kept on a bamboo stick and decorated with silk cloth, copper lotas, neem leaves, and a sugar garland. On this day, people clean their houses, make rangoli and wear new clothes. The festival begins with the consumption of a mixture of neem leaves, tamarind and jaggery. Special dishes like shrikhand-puri and puran poli are prepared with great enthusiasm.
