Chaitra Navratri 2026 is set to begin on 19th March 2026. During the nine sacred days of Navratri, the devotees worship Maa Durga, engage in spiritual deeds and observe a vrat. With the onset of Navratri, the question arises in the minds of many women: can they fast during their periods? Today, let us discuss what should be the rules of worship and fasting during menstruation from the point of view of religious beliefs and health.

Chaitra Navratri 2026: Can Women Keep Navratri Fast During Their Periods?

Yes, women can keep their Navratri fast even on periods. However, during the period, they should refrain from touching the akhand jyoti, puja samagri and temple altar.

Devi Shakti is in every woman, and the menstrual cycle is a time of self-care. There’s no spiritual reason you can’t fast, but be aware of your body’s limitations.

Now, let us uncover some broader reasons why worshipping is discouraged during periods:

Religious Perspective On Menstruation And Purity

Sanatan Dharma believes in the importance of the purity of the body and the mind. Traditionally, it was also believed that women were considered impure during menstruation and were not allowed to enter the temple or touch anything sacred. Today, this belief has led many people to think that fasting or demanding puja should not happen during menstruation.

A Modern And Scientific View

Today, people live their religion practically. Menstruation is a normal phase of life. God, the creator of all human beings, does not stop any human being from devoting themselves to God just because of a normal phase of life. The human mind is the source of devotion. If your heart is true, then you can even pray to Maa Durga while on your period.

Prioritise Health First

Apart from faith and principles, health is the first choice when it comes to fasting. When women face hormonal imbalances during their menstrual cycle, it may cause pain and weakness. In such a state:

- Do not attempt a long period of fasting. If you are extremely weak, avoid a strict fast for nine days.

- Listen to your body and break your fast immediately if you feel dizziness, sharp stomach pain, or discomfort. Even Maa Durga will not expect you to break your fast and honour her by hurting yourself.

- If you do not want to eat grains, then you can consume fast-friendly food items like sabutdana khichdi, samak rice, kuttu atta roti, vrat-friendly vegetables, etc.

Additional Rules To Follow While Observing Navratri Fast On Periods

During the fasting period, focus on mental worship or Mansik Puja. Keep meditating upon Maa Durga and make sure not to touch the idols. Make sure to consume milk, fruits, and coconut water instead of Nirjala fasting. Ask the rest of the members in the house to perform the puja and prepare bhog.
