Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi took a sharp dig at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav over the representation of Muslim leaders in constituencies such as Azamgarh and Firozabad.

He remarked that the Samajwadi Party's name should be changed to 'Samajwadi Yadav Parivar', targeting party chief Akhilesh Yadav for not fielding Muslim candidates in Muslim-majority constituencies.

The remarks were made while addressing a rally on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana district, which is a stronghold of the SP.

"Akhilesh Yadav, the name of your party should be changed from Samajwadi to Samajwadi Yadav Parivar."

"There was a time when a Muslim used to win from Azamgarh. Now Akhilesh's brother has become an MP from there. There was a time when a Muslim MP became an MP from Firozabad. Now Akhilesh's family members have become MPs from there," he added.

Owaisi criticised Akhilesh Yadav over the Muzaffarnagar riots, alleging that around 50,000 people were displaced from their homes during the violence when the Samajwadi Party was in power in Uttar Pradesh.

"So tell me, the people of Muzaffarnagar and Kairana, isn't it true that when Akhilesh was the Chief Minister, right on this land, you, we, and the world saw with our own eyes how the Muzaffarnagar riots happened? 50,000 people were driven out of their homes," he said.

The AIMIM chief further alleged that girls were attacked and children were orphaned during the riots, while families who had lived in their villages for generations were left homeless.

"Whose government was it? It was the Samajwadi government. Who was the Chief Minister? Akhilesh Yadav was the Chief Minister," Owaisi said.

The Muzaffarnagar Assembly constituency has been represented by BJP MLA Kapil Dev Agarwal since 2015. He won the seat in the 2015 by-election, retained it in 2017, and won again in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Before that, SP MLA Chitranjan Swaroop held the constituency.

Muzaffarnagar has a large Muslim voter population of around 1.25 to 1.3 lakh out of roughly 3.4 to 3.5 lakh total voters (about 37.2 per cent ), according to data from Chanakya political consultancy.
