Michael Jackson first performed the moonwalk publicly during his 1983 performance of Billie Jean. This moment instantly became historic. The way he glided backward while appearing to walk forward left audiences stunned and set a new standard for stage performances.

The dance move, initially referred to as the ‘backslide,’ was first demonstrated by tap dancer Bill Bailey in 1955 and later adopted by performers such as Marcel Marceau and The Electric Boogaloos before Jackson.
