This was Anushka Sharma and Virat Kholi's third trip to Vrindavan this year. The couple's return to India from the UK coincided with Messi's arrival to start his multi-city tour. Anushka, Virat along with their kids went to Vrindavan in January earlier this year to seek Premanand Ji Maharaj's blessings. They later stopped a day after the Indian batsman declared his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025. It has been clear in recent years that Anushka and Virat have a spiritual bent. They went to the Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Temple in 2023. Among other temples, they have also been spotted at the ashram of Neem Karoli Baba in Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi's trip to India garnered international attention as he visited Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The football legend met supporters and well-known personalities from Indian sports and entertainment. His interactions with Indian football star Sunil Chhetri and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium heightened expectations of a potential meeting between Messi and Kohli.

For the unversed, Virat Kohli declared his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025. With 9,230 runs in 123 games, including 30 hundreds and 31 fifties, he concluded an incredible 14-year red-ball career.
