Indian-born American journalist and political commentator Fareed Zakaria has raised concerns about declining trust in the United States across the world. He remarked that countries from India to Canada, the Middle East and Europe are no longer sure whether they can trust Washington. His statements come at a time when US President Donald Trump presents himself as a global peace broker, claiming credit for resolving conflicts between countries and also intensifying efforts to “Make America Great Again.”
Zakaria Questions Dependence On America
During his weekly international affairs programme on CNN, Fareed Zakaria GPS, Zakaria expressed his views over the Starlink row between Elon Musk and the Indian government. He questioned whether India would want to depend on American satellite technology during a future conflict with Pakistan.
From India to Canada to the Middle East to Europe, countries no longer know whether they can trust America. The consequences could be disastrous. My take: https://t.co/QP63ARrasW

“If India finds itself in another conflict with Pakistan, would it really want its armed forces to be utterly dependent on an American satellite system controlled by Elon Musk and Donald Trump?” Zakaria said. He criticised Musk for his comments about India, saying the billionaire had failed to understand the growing concerns about American influence around the world.

“Elon Musk picked the wrong moment to lecture Indians..Musk didn’t understand that in India, along with most of the world, trust in America is collapsing,” he added. He further warned that the falling trust by so many nations in America can be disastrous. Zakaria's comments also come at time when the US is engaged in trade dispute with Canada, Brazil and many other countries.
About The Starlink Row
Zakaria’s remark came after a controversy began when Musk accused certain business groups in India of blocking Starlink's satellite communication services to protect their market position. On October 7, Musk responded to a post on X by the DodgeDesigner handle about the lack of mobile coverage in more than 11,000 villages.
“Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people. "You can guess who they are... This is a crime against the people of India!” he wrote on X. His comment came at a time when Starlink, owned by Musk's SpaceX, is seeking to enter India's satellite internet market.
Indian Govt Rejects Allegations
Responding to Musk’s remarks, the Ministry of Communications had rejected claims that India's rules for satellite communication services were unfair or discriminatory. It said the same fair and non-discriminatory authorisation framework applied to all telecommunication services, including satellite communications. The dispute grew further when Musk brought Reliance and its chairman, Mukesh Ambani, into the debate without directly naming him at first. In a separate post, he had questioned the influence of India's business leaders by asking, "Is Ambani the real boss of India?"
