Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on September 23 on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Geo News reported, citing its high-level sources.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host a reception dinner for heads of state and government attending the UNGA 81 at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue on the evening of September 23, The News reported on Sunday.
Fourth meeting with Trump
If this face-to-face interaction happens, this would be the fourth time in a year when the Pakistani Prime Minister will be meeting Trump. Earlier in September last year, Sharif got only 36-second informal interaction opportunity with the American leader on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
According to Geo News, Shehbaz has already received an invitation to the dinner, which will be attended by several world leaders. The gathering will provide him an opportunity to interact with other heads of state and government, the sources said.
Sharif to meet Bangladesh PM
As per the report, Sharif will also be meeting Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman on the sidelines of the event. Notably, Rahman has not visited New Delhi despite India’s invitation to BIMSTEC Summit.
Further, Pakistani media reported that Sharif is expected to raise the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) by India, citing the recent verdict of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which rejected India's contention. Besides Pakistan's traditional allies, several other countries have assured Islamabad of support for its position, it added.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman assumed charge as President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly last week, taking over the presidency of the world body's annual session. His presence at the top level is expected to provide an edge to Sharif’s Kashmir rhetoric at the UN.
