The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday confirmed that an Indian national was killed after a commercial vessel carrying three Indian crew members came under attack in the Black Sea. The incident took place on July 18, while the vessel MV OMORFI was reportedly transiting through Russian territorial waters. The other two Indian nationals on board have been reported safe.

Indian Crew Member Killed, Two Others Safe

In a statement, the MEA extended condolences to the bereaved family, adding that the Indian Mission in Russia has contacted relevant authorities and is working to provide all possible assistance to the affected family. "It has come to our attention that on 18 July 2026, the commercial vessel MV OMORFI was attacked while transiting the Black Sea, reportedly in Russian territorial waters. At the time of the incident, there were ten crew members on board, including three Indian nationals," the statement noted.

"As per available information, one Indian national tragically lost his life in the attack. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased. The other two Indian nationals on board are reported to be safe," the MEA added.

MEA Condemns Attack

The MEA strongly condemned attacks targeting commercial shipping, saying such incidents put the lives of civilian crew members at risk and pose a serious threat to freedom of navigation and international commerce. "India unequivocally condemns such attacks targeting commercial shipping and placing the lives of innocent civilian crew members at risk. It is a matter of serious concern that the freedom of navigation and international commerce is facing increasing threats," the MEA noted.

The MEA also called upon all concerned parties to respect international obligations and take steps to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation. "India calls upon all concerned parties to uphold international obligations to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation and uninterrupted flow of global commerce," the statement added.
