As 2025 will come to an end in a few hours, it becomes important to look back at regions that witnessed the highest and lowest temperatures this year. Global weather patterns showcase some of the most intense geographical diversities around the world, with a few countries experiencing extreme heat waves, while other nations suffer from bone-chilling cold weather. Especially, in the last month of the year, when the winter season gained momentum. In December, a few nations showcased temperatures recorded at less than single digits in several northern and northeastern parts. On the other hand, some nations boiled under the highest temperature of approximately 54.0 degrees Celsius.

The list comes in handy to get general insights on the prevailing weather conditions, along with the reason behind these cities becoming so distinctively cold. In 2025, global weather patterns highlighted stark contrasts. Weather records from various meteorological sources pinpointed Mitribah in Kuwait for the highest average temperatures, alongside Antarctica and Russia as the coldest countries in the world.

Hottest Countries In 2025

Mitribah in Kuwait topped the list with an average yearly temperature of 54.0 degrees Celsius, driven by its desert climate and minimal rainfall. Basra in Iraq followed closely at 53.9 degrees Celsius, where desert expansion intensified heatwaves.

Ahvaz in Iran recorded 53.9 degrees Celsius on average, with urban areas facing prolonged humidity-fueled highs, along with Al Ain at 52.1 degrees Celsius.

Antarctica registered the lowest temperature at -56.7 degrees Celsius. Additionally, here the significant territories witness a temperature drop to below -50 degrees Celsius during the winter season.  Followed by Russia with -5.1 degrees Celsius, with Siberian stations such as Oymyakon recording extreme lows of -70 degrees Celsius.

Canada in North America recorded an average of -5.3 degrees Celsius, and Mongolia recorded -0.7 degrees Celsius with night chills as low as -40 degrees Celsius. At last, these cold conditions in the coldest countries are a result of polar proximity and elevation.

Lastly, phenomena like El Niño remnants caused high temperature rises in hotspot locations of Africa that put a significant strain on agriculture and water resources, due to extremely hot weather situations. On the other hand, cold extreme weathers in the northern hemisphere were associated with polar vortex disruptions, which resulted in an energy crisis. In both spectra, urban heat islands amplified records in both spectra, urging an urgent call to action for adaptive infrastructure across the globe.
