When it comes to running a marathon, a good smartwatch can make a huge difference; it is as essential as a good pair of shoes. The Cupertino-based tech giant's latest offer, when it comes to wearables, the Apple Watch 11 with watchOS 26 on board, targets endurance athletes, who want to go for that extra mile. With the Mumbai Marathon Concluded, insights from professional atheletes provide us with an account of how the Apple Watch is a game changer for them, but first lets look at the features the Apple Watch 11 comes with that make it a standout choice for Marathon Runners.

Lasting Battery, Durable Ion-X Glass, And 5G Equipped

When it comes to long endurance activities, like running a marathon, longevity and durability make all the difference. One of the biggest upgrades this time is therefore definitely the battery life, with the Apple Watch Series 11 offering up to 24 hours of battery life, that too with a full day of activity and workout logging. This also makes it useful for tracking sleep. In low power mode you can get up to 38 hours. For sessions that run long, it can handle up to eight hours of outdoor running with a heart rate monitor and GPS enabled.

Durability has also been improved. The aluminum models now feature tougher Ion-X glass with significantly higher scratch resistance, thanks to a new ceramic coating bonded at an atomic level. This makes the watch better suited for daily runs, crowded race environments, and unpredictable weather. Titanium variants continue to use sapphire crystal for maximum protection.

Another notable upgrade is in the cellular network's department, and the tech giant has for the first time introduced built-in 5G support. Now it's easy to stream music while you go on your long-distance runs, without the hassle of carrying your iPhone.

Sleep Score

One of the most overlooked parts of marathon running is recovery and sleep, and as you progress in your journey and get ready to take on the next marathon, keeping track of your sleep parameters becomes essential. with the new Sleep Score feature in watchOS 26. Using metrics like sleep duration, consistency, awakenings, and sleep stages, Apple Watch now provides a clear, easy-to-understand score each morning. The approach on which Sleep Score works has been backed by studies published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the National Sleep Foundation, and the World Sleep Society.

A Workout Buddy

Apple has now also introduced a Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence, and it does something very unique: it delivers personalized spoken motivation, which is first analyzed through the user's workout data and history. Moreover, throughout your session, the motivation will be delivered based on your data, like heart rate, pace, distance, fitness milestones, etc.

The reimagined workout app also helps in customizing each session according to your personal needs, and you can also manage workouts directly from the iPhone as well.

Fast Charging

Another useful element in the Apple Watch Series 11 is its fast charging, which can give you up to 8 hours of battery life with a quick top-off of just 15 minutes, good for those fast-paced days.

The Wrist Flick

With this one-handed gesture, you can dismiss notifications, silence calls, close the Smart Stack, or return to your home screen.

How Hard Did You Fall?

By analyzing data from its gyroscope and accelerometer, the Apple Watch Series 11 can detect how hard of a fall you took. If it detects that you have taken a serious fall, an alert is sent to the watch, and you can initiate an emergency call or dismiss the alert. Apart from that, if the watch detects that you have remained motionless for more than a minute, an emergency call can also be placed automatically, and your emergency contacts will receive a message and location. These falls can also be detected during workouts.

With all these features, Apple Watch Series 11 positions itself as a comprehensive companion for anyone who is into fitness and more so for marathon runners. It makes it easier to stay consistent, recover smarter, and get you ready for that long run. With insights from professional athletes, let's take a look at how the Apple Watch experience has helped in enhancing their routine.

Diya Nayar, who is a Nike Athlete & Marathon Runner, has shared, "Having run the Mumbai Marathon since 2015, I’ve learned that running strong is as much about restraint as it is effort—especially in the final week. I focus on sleep, hydration, and arriving at the start line fresh, calm, and confident, rather than chasing last-minute fitness. On race day, controlled pacing, early fueling, and respecting the conditions are what make the difference over the second half of the race.

I’ve been using the Apple Watch for 9 years, and this year for the half marathon in Mumbai, my Apple Watch Ultra 3 helps me stay disciplined with my effort. I rely on pace and heart rate zones to manage intensity through the early kilometers and avoid overreaching in the humidity. Features like precise GPS tracking and custom alerts allow me to stay focused on the run itself—fueling, hydrating, and maintaining rhythm—rather than constantly checking my watch. And to help carry me through the distance, I always have my AirPods plugged in to give me that extra pump!

Post-race, I use recovery metrics such as heart rate recovery, sleep, and training load to understand how my body has responded and to guide my recovery over the following days. For me, performance is not just about how fast you run on race day, but how well you recover and continue to train consistently over the long term. The finish line is not the end, but just the beginning."
