Instagram New Instants feature: Meta has announced a new Instagram feature called Instants, aimed at making photo sharing feel faster, lighter, and more spontaneous. Instead of polished posts and heavily edited uploads, the company is pushing users towards more natural interactions with close friends through disappearing photos shared directly inside Instagram DMs.
The feature appears inside the Instagram inbox and allows users to quickly snap and send photos to Close Friends or mutual followers. Meta says the entire experience is designed around “in-the-moment” sharing, where the focus is on speed and authenticity rather than editing or perfect presentation.
A Simpler Photo Sharing Experience
Unlike regular Instagram Stories or posts, Instants keeps editing options very limited. Users can add a caption before sending a photo, but once shared, no further edits can be made. The photos arrive inside a stack in the recipient’s inbox and automatically disappear after being viewed.

Friends can still react or reply to the shared photos directly through Instagram DMs, keeping conversations active without turning the experience into a full social feed.
Meta is also adding a few extra tools around the feature. Shared Instants are privately stored inside an archive for up to one year, allowing users to revisit them later. The archive can even create recap Stories by combining older Instants into a single Story post. There is also an Undo option that lets users retract a shared Instant before the recipient opens it.
Meta Is Also Testing A Separate Instants App
Alongside the in-app feature, Meta has introduced a standalone Instants app for both Android and iOS in select markets. The app is currently experimental and is mainly designed to offer quicker access to the camera without needing to fully open Instagram.
Users can log into the standalone app using their existing Instagram credentials, and anything shared through it will still sync across Instagram. Friends will be able to see shared Instants regardless of whether they use Instagram directly or the dedicated app.
Meta says the app may continue evolving based on user feedback as the company experiments with how people respond to more casual social sharing experiences.
Privacy And Teen Safety Remain A Big Focus
Meta says existing Instagram privacy protections will also apply to Instants. Users will still have access to features like block, mute, and restrict controls, while shared photos remain visible only to selected recipients. The company also says screenshots and screen recordings are disabled for Instants.
For teenagers, the feature works alongside Instagram Teen Accounts and Family Centre supervision tools. This includes screen time controls, automatic Sleep Mode between 10pm and 7am, and notifications for parents when supervised teens download the standalone Instants app.
