Thunderstorm Safety At Home:  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR for Tuesday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The alert has warned of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Lightning, wind, heavy rains, and sometimes even power failure are the major problems that come along with thunderstorms.

7 Thunderstorm Safety Tips: 

1. Unplug All The Electrical Appliances

You should unplug all the electrical appliances, which can be damaged by power surges when lightning strikes your house. You should unplug televisions, computers, etc.

2. Do Not Use Wired Equipment

During a thunderstorm, do not use wired equipment such as mobile phones plugged into chargers, laptops connected to electrical wires, and other things.

3. Avoid Standing Near Open Windows

You should avoid standing near open windows and doors since strong winds may blow and shatter your window glass, which might cause injury to you.

4. Secure Loose Items

You need to secure any loose items outdoors, like plants, wall hangings, or anything which you think might blow in the air during a thunderstorm and cause severe damage.

5. Disconnect The Main Power Source

If there is too much lightning or constant power surges due to voltage changes, then disconnecting the main power source may provide additional safety.

It might sound like a lot, but always keep all the necessary supplies at your place, like flashlights, batteries, candles, a power bank, and a first-aid kit. There could be power cuts during thunderstorms; so, prepare beforehand.

7. Avoid Water Connections

While it is thundering outside, one must avoid taking showers or washing the dishes and should never touch the metal pipes since lightning can reach you through water.
