Sugarcane vs Watermelon In Summer:  As temperatures rise, most of us instinctively reach out for something cold and refreshing. Sugarcane juice and watermelon juice are two of the most popular summer choices, often seen and perceived as natural ways to cool the body. But when we look a little deeper, hydration is not truly about what feels cooling; it’s rather about how the body actually responds.

To know which is more hydrating in the summer, watermelon or sugarcane juice, The Daily Jagran turned to Functional Nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO and Founder of iThrive, a Pune-based health and wellness platform.

The Nutritionist stated, “Watermelon juice is slightly closer to what the body needs for hydration. It has a high water content, along with electrolytes such as potassium, which further support fluid balance at a cellular level. It is lighter on digestion and doesn’t overwhelm the system, making it a better everyday option for staying hydrated, especially in hot weather.”

She added, “Sugarcane juice, on the other hand, is often perceived as energising, and it is. But that energy comes mainly from a high concentration of natural sugars. While it can give an instant boost, specifically if someone is feeling depleted or exposed to heat for long hours, it can also spike blood sugar levels. For people dealing with insulin resistance, fatigue, or metabolic imbalances, frequent consumption might do more harm than good.”

From a functional perspective, true cooling is not really just about temperature; it’s about reducing internal inflammation and supporting stable energy to a great extent. Watermelon, being comparatively lighter and less glycaemically intense, aligns quite well with the goal for most people.

That said, context matters a lot. Sugarcane juice can be useful occasionally, for example, after prolonged physical exertion or intense heat exposure, where quick replenishment is needed. But it shouldn’t be at all mistaken as a primary hydration source.
