Oral hygiene is one of the most ignored areas of health. While brushing your teeth twice a day is said to be the most common way of keeping your teeth clean and healthy, there are so many factors that come into play when maintaining oral health and preventing oral cancer. March 20 is observed as World Oral Health Day (WOHD) every year. It focuses on the fact that good oral health is essential for a happy and healthy life.

This year, the theme of World Oral Health Day is 'A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life'. As a part of the 3-year 'Happy Mouth' campaign theme, it is aimed to "empower people with the knowledge, tools and confidence to secure good oral health", as per WOHD.org.

Can mouthwash help prevent oral cancer?

There are many misconceptions around oral health, and whether mouthwash can help prevent oral cancer is one of them. It is believed that brushing your teeth itself is not enough to keep them protected, but using mouthwash is also an important step in keeping your mouth healthy. Talking about the same, Dr Priyanka Kumari told The Daily Jagran that mouthwash "lowers the overall microbial load in the mouth and contributes to better oral health and hygiene. It is a useful addition to one's daily oral care routine"

However, the dentist clarifies that "it should not be mistaken for a preventive measure against oral cancer."

She further explains, "True prevention lies in eliminating risk factors - particularly tobacco, smoking, and gutkha - and in regular dental check-ups for early detection."

What are the early warning signs of oral cancer?

Dr Priyanka Kumari reveals that there are several changes one may notice in the mouth without getting any tests done that can be the first signs of oral cancer. She explains, "First, a non-healing sore in the mouth that persists for more than 14 days. Any ulcer or sore that simply refuses to heal within two weeks should never be ignored."

Secondly, any mucosal changes appearing as white or red patches inside the mouth should prompt an immediate visit to the doctor. This is especially significant in individuals with a habit of tobacco use, smoking, or consumption of gutkha. These patches can be early indicators of pre-cancerous or cancerous changes and must be evaluated by a specialist without delay.

Oral cancer cases in India continue to rise due to factors such as tobacco consumption, smoking, alcohol intake, poor oral hygiene, and delayed dental check-ups. Despite being largely preventable, oral cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers in the country. It is important to start preventive measures at an early age and keep yourself informed to prevent it from becoming something dangerous.
