May 2026 will begin with Buddha Purnima on May 1st, with the celebration of the birth, enlightenment and lessons of Lord Buddha; devotees light diyas, engage in meditation and pilgrimage to stupas. May Day, also regarded as International Labour Day, falls on May 1st, marking the worldwide appreciation of workers’ rights with rallies and picnics. Then, Maharashtra Day is also on the same day, commemorating the statehood of Maharashtra on 1st May 1960 with parades.

Later in the month is Mother’s Day, which falls every year on May 10th. The day is a tribute to mothers across the world. Kids give flowers and gifts to moms and even post on social media platforms to celebrate the selfless existence of mothers.

In the religious context, Vat Savitri Vrat and Shani Jayanti are commemorated on May 16th. Both are religious occasions; in one, married women observe a fast to seek the longevity of their husbands by worshipping under banyan trees, and the latter is the celebration of the birth of god Shani with black sesame offerings.

Later in the month is Ganga Dussehra, celebrated on May 25th. The rituals of the holy festival include the descent of the Ganga River with a dip.
