OTT platforms have completely transformed entertainment in India. Before streaming platforms became popular, television serials and films ruled audience screens. However, a few web series slowly changed viewing habits and introduced binge-watching culture to Indian viewers. Shows like Permanent roommates to Sacred games and Mirzapur, became viral through social media discussions and word of mouth. They also proved that digital entertainment could become as successful as mainstream cinema. From relatable comedy dramas to dark crime thrillers, these series played a major role in shaping India’s OTT revolution.

Which Was India's First Viral OTT Show? 

Permanent Roommates is widely considered one of India’s first viral OTT shows. The series premiered in 2014 and was created by The Viral Fever. It starred Sumeet Vyas and Nidhi Singh in lead roles. The romantic comedy followed the story of a young couple dealing with love, commitment, and long-distance relationships. The show was streamed on YouTube and TVF’s digital platform and quickly became popular among young viewers for its relatable storytelling and fresh presentation style.

Sacred Games Changed OTT Entertainment

Sacred Games released in 2018 on Netflix and completely changed India’s OTT landscape. Released on Netflix, the crime thriller starred Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Pankaj Tripathi, Radhika Apte, Kubbra Sait, Kalki Koechlin were also in the show. Its dark theme, gripping storytelling, and bold content made it one of the biggest streaming sensations in the country. 

Mirzapur Also Became A Massive Hit

Mirzapur became another major OTT success after its release on Amazon Prime Video in 2018. Featuring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu and others, the action-crime drama explores the ruthless underworld of the Purvanchal region in Uttar Pradesh, following the power-hungry mafia don. 

The show gained popularity because of its intense violence, strong dialogues and unforgettable characters. The series, which has 3 seasons, was released on Amazon Prime Video.
