The controversy began following the abrupt exit of Ranveer Singh from Don 3. After his exit from the film, reports came out that the filmmaker, Farhan Akhtar, and his Excel Entertainment sought compensation for the pre-production loss of about Rs 40-45 crore.

The matter was later taken to the Producers Guild of India before FWICE became involved. On May 25, the federation issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh, claiming he failed to respond to repeated requests for discussions regarding the dispute.
