US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced an indefinite extension of the ceasefire with Iran to allow both sides more time for peace talks aimed at ending the war. His announcement, which appeared to be unilateral, came as a two-week truce was set to expire on April 22. His statement also suggested that the much-anticipated second round of talks between Tehran and Washington in Pakistan has not yet taken off following Iran’s refusal to participate.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the move was made at Pakistan’s request. He stated that the US Navy would continue its blockade of Iran’s ports and coastline until Tehran presents a “unified proposal.” The uncertainty over another round of peace talks has now raised questions over Iran’s leadership as Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is still not seen in public.

How His Absence Is Affecting US-Iran Talks?
Mojtaba, who took over leadership of Iran after assassination of his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has not made any public appearance since the outbreak of conflict on February 28. However, he continues to issue strong warnings to the US through official channels, television broadcasts, and social media. According to US officials and reports cited by CNN, the absence of clear leadership is affecting Iran’s decision-making process.
The vacuum has also affected talks facilitated by Pakistan. Experts point out that the lack of a visible leader has created confusion within Tehran’s government. They have suggested gaps in receiving clear instructions, leading to disagreements on how to respond to Washington and how to handle negotiations. Ali Vaez of the International Crisis Group told CNN that Mojtaba does not appear to be actively managing detailed decisions but may only be approving major policies.
The delay in the talks concerns two major issues; Tehran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz crisis remain unresolved. Iran is believed to possess around 440 kilograms of 60 per cent enriched uranium. As the percentage is close to the level needed to build nuclear weapons, it remains a major sticking point in negotiations. It can only be mitigated when there is clear commitment from Iranian leadership.
Where Is Mojtaba Khamenei?
Reports suggest that Mojtaba may have been injured during recent US strikes, including fractured foot and facial injuries. Earlier on April 7, an intelligence assessment revealed that he was receiving medical treatment in Qom city of Iran. According to The Times UK report, citing a diplomatic memo, the new Supreme Leader was unconscious and being treated for a "severe" medical condition. He was also reported to be not in condition to get involved in any decision-making process of the regime.
