  3. Jury recommends life sentence for mother in Muskogee County.

An Oklahoma woman has been found guilty after prosecutors accused her of failing to protect her 11-year-old daughter from sexual abuse by her husband. The case came to light after the child gave birth to a baby at home without medical help. DNA testing later confirmed that the woman’s husband was the baby’s father.

Mother Found Guilty

According to People report, the woman, identified as Cherie Walker was convicted on July 17, of one count of enabling child sexual abuse and six counts of child neglect after a trial in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. Prosecutors said Walker knew that her husband, Dustin Walker, was abusing their daughter but failed to stop it or protect the child.

A jury found her guilty on all seven charges after hearing testimony from police officers, emergency workers, medical experts, government officials, family members and others. The jury recommended a sentence of life in prison on each count.

Case Began After Child Gave Birth At Home

The investigation started in August last year after authorities discovered that the 11-year-old girl had given birth to a baby inside her family’s home in Muskogee. According to officials, the child had no prenatal check-ups or medical assistance during the pregnancy. She had not received medical care for more than a year.

DNA testing later showed a 99 per cent probability that Walker was the father of the baby. Walker had already pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 and six counts of child neglect. He was sentenced to life in prison for the sexual abuse charge, along with additional prison terms for neglect charges.

Prosecutor Calls Child’s Experience A 'Horrific Ordeal'

Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson also spoke about the lasting impact of the abuse on the child. “This child is traumatised,” Hutson previously told News On 6. “She’s been through a horrific ordeal. Not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life,” she added.
