The United States and Iran are set to formally sign the much-anticipated peace deal on Friday at the Burgenstock Resort near Lucerne, Switzerland. The agreement, aimed at ending months of conflict in West Asia, was earlier signed electronically on Sunday after both sides announced a breakthrough in negotiations.

Burgenstock Resort to host US-Iran deal signing

The signing ceremony will take place at the luxury mountainside resort overlooking Lake Lucerne, about an hour from Zurich. A spokesperson for the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on Tuesday confirmed that Switzerland has been chosen as the venue. Iran has confirmed that its top negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, will attend the event. The US will be represented by Vice President JD Vance, while President Donald Trump may also attend. Trump’s participation has not been officially confirmed so far.

Why was Burgenstock chosen?

Swiss officials said the resort was selected because of its isolated location and strong security arrangements, making it suitable for sensitive diplomatic talks. The Swiss Foreign Ministry said the choice of Burgenstock was jointly proposed by Pakistan and Qatar, which have been acting as mediators in the talks between Tehran and Washington.

"The location was proposed by the Pakistani and Qatari mediators, as well as by the US and Iran. Switzerland is acting as a facilitator in this process, creating the practical and diplomatic conditions necessary for this meeting to take place on Swiss territory," the spokesperson said.

About the Resort

Burgenstock Resort sits on a mountain ridge around 500 metres above Lake Lucerne and offers beautiful views of the lake and the Swiss Alps. Spread across more than 60 hectares, it is one of Switzerland's best-known luxury destinations. According to the resort's website, Burgenstock has three hotels, luxury residences and villas, seven restaurants and around 360 rooms.

Accommodation ranges from standard chalets to royal suites that can cost nearly 19,500 Swiss francs per night. The property is also home to the Hammetschwand Lift, Europe's highest outdoor elevator.

A history of hosting world leaders

For more than 150 years, the resort has hosted royalty, political leaders, and celebrities. Italian Actress Sophia Loren owned a chalet on the property, while Scottish actor Sean Connery stayed there during the filming of the James Bond movie Goldfinger. Burgenstock has also become an important venue for international diplomacy.

In 2024, it hosted a major peace summit on Ukraine attended by representatives from more than 90 countries. Earlier, Sudanese groups had also reached a ceasefire agreement there in 2002, while Cyprus reunification talks were held at the resort in 2004 under United Nations supervision.
