- US forces disabled Iran-flagged tanker M/T Hasna in Gulf of Oman.
- Tanker violated blockade attempting to reach Iranian port.
- Trump asserted Iran is running out of options.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday said that US forces disabled an Iran-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman after it allegedly tried to sail toward an Iranian port in violation of a blockade. The development comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and renewed warnings from President Donald Trump, who has said that further escalation could have serious consequences for Tehran.
US Forces Fire On Iran-Flagged Vessel
According to CENTCOM, US forces were monitoring the vessel named M/T Hasna as it moved through international waters toward Iran. Officials said the ship was carrying no cargo at the time. The US military said it issued multiple warnings to the tanker and informed the crew that it was violating a blockade. However, the vessel did not respond or change course.
Why Did US Disable Iran-Flagged Tanker?
After the crew failed to comply, US forces disabled the tanker’s rudder by firing rounds from a 20mm cannon on an F/A-18 Super Hornet launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. “US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces observed M/T Hasna as it transited international waters enroute to an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman. American forces issued multiple warnings and informed the Iranian-flagged vessel it was in violation of the U.S. blockade,” the statement noted.
CENTCOM further added that the tanker is now unable to continue sailing toward Iran. It reiterated that the blockade against ships entering or leaving Iranian ports remains in place, and US forces will continue to enforce it. “The US blockade against ships attempting to enter or depart Iranian ports remains in full effect. CENTCOM forces continue to act deliberately and professionally to ensure compliance,” the statement added.
