Kyiv Shooting: Ukrainian police shot dead a man who opened fire in a district of Kyiv on Saturday and then barricaded himself inside a supermarket. At least five people were killed, and several others injured in the attack. Ukraine Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the attacker had taken people hostage and fired at a police officer.

5 Killed, Several Injured In Shooting

Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the attacker was a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow. He added that four people were killed on the street and one inside the supermarket, where the gunman was carrying an automatic weapon. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed the arrest, stating ten people are currently in hospital receiving treatment for injuries and trauma, while four hostages were successfully rescued during the operation.

Prez Zelenskyy Assures Action

The attacker was killed after Special police forces stormed the supermarket and attempts to negotiate failed. He assured that the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are working on a swift investigation. The President also instructed officials to ensure that only verified information is shared with the public.

Zelenskyy wrote on X, “Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko has just reported that the attacker in Kyiv who opened fire on civilians has been eliminated. All the circumstances are being established. At present, 5 people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to the families and loved ones. Ten people are currently hospitalized with injuries and trauma. All are receiving the necessary assistance. Four hostages have been rescued. “

He added, “We expect a swift investigation. Investigators of the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are working. I have instructed the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Head of the National Police of Ukraine to make all verified information in this case available to the public.”
