- UK twins discover they have different biological fathers.
- DNA tests revealed rare heteropaternal superfecundation case.
- Only about 20 such cases identified worldwide.
A rare medical case has come to light from the United Kingdom, where two non-identical twins discovered that they didn’t share the same father. For most of their lives, the girls believed they were born at the same time from the same mother and had a common father. However, a DNA test revealed something surprising, leaving both of them shocked.
Twins Discover They Have Different Fathers
The twins, identified as Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne always believed they had the same father, but Michelle decided to take a DNA test because she felt they did not look alike. The test showed that she had a different father than her sister. After more testing, Lavinia also found that her real father was different from Michell’s. She told the BBC, “She was the one thing that belonged to me, the one thing that I was certain about, the one thing that I was sure of…And then she wasn't.”

The revelation was more devastating as their mother had early-onset dementia and was no longer able to answer their questions. She was said to be a vulnerable 19-year-old when she gave birth to them in Nottingham in 1976. After giving birth, she had mostly been absent from their lives. “She had suffered abuse at the hands of her stepfather," Michelle said. She added, “My mother was in and out of foster care and children's homes throughout her childhood.”

How Is This Even Possible?
This is how they found out they were a rare case of heteropaternal superfecundation. In this condition, twins have the same mother but different fathers. This happens only if a woman releases two eggs at the same time and has relations with two different men within a few days.
Since sperm can live inside the body for up to five days, each sperm has the possibility of getting fertilised by sperm from a different man. This is why the twins, despite being born together, are actually half-sisters instead of full sisters. So far, only around 20 cases of heteropaternal superfecundation have ever been identified worldwide.
