CIA Revisits Abbottabad Operation
he US special forces operation, carried out on May 2, 2011, was based on years of intelligence gathering. Laden was tracked to a heavily secured compound in Pakistan’s Abbottabad and was killed within minutes of the raid. The mission was considered as one of the most significant counter-terror operations in America’s history.
The CIA wrote, “Fifteen years ago today (1 May 2011), U.S. Navy SEALs raided a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and killed Usama Bin Laden. The raid marked the end of a more than 15-year effort by partners across the Intelligence Community to find Bin Ladin.”

Trump’s repeated praise of Pakistan’s leadership and considerable weightage he has given to Islamabad to act as mediator in talks with Iran, points to his attempt to bridge the gap between the two countries. US-Pakistan relations have gone through repeated tensions over several issues like terrorism, Afghanistan conflict and others. Also, no US president has visited Pakistan in a long time since 2006. This is mainly because of security risks and not so trusted diplomatic relations.

Clinton Warning's Recalled
As Trump continues to give importance to Pakistan, words of former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton should serve as a stark reminder to the US. She had once said, “You can’t keep snakes in your backyard and expect them to only bite your neighbours.” Clinton had delivered this famous remark in 2011 in Islamabad, while standing alongside Pakistan's then-Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
In her address, she had warned Pakistan that nurturing extremist groups for geopolitical gain against neighbours will eventually result in those groups attacking the host nation. In the current context, Clinton’s words should serve as a reminder that relationships with regional partners must be handled with caution and clear strategic understanding.
