United States President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran have been cancelled following high-level diplomatic discussions reportedly approved by Iranian leadership and other international stakeholders. His statement came hours after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a strong response to Trump’s earlier warning, stating that the US would “see a different Iran”.

Trump Calls Off Planned Iran Strikes

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision comes as talks on a broader agreement have progressed, involving multiple countries including the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt. However, he emphasised that a naval blockade will remain in place until the deal is finalised, with details on the signing expected to be announced soon.

“Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening. Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others,” Trump wrote.

The statement added, “The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly. DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” Earlier in the day, Trump had warned that the US would strike Iran "very hard" tonight amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to finalise a peace deal.

Tehran Issues Stark Warning

He claimed that Washington, in the not-so-"distant future", will take control of Iran's Kharg Island, which functions as the main terminal for almost all of its oil exports and other oil infrastructure, aiming to dominate Tehran's oil and gas markets. Hours later, Ghalibaf issued a sharp response, warning that “wrong strategies and impulsive decisions will reset the entire board for the worse.”

In a post on X, the Iranian Parliament Speaker warned that such actions could have severe global consequences, particularly for energy stability and financial markets. Signalling a strong response to any potential action, Ghalibaf said: “You will see a different Iran.”
