Tensions between the United States and Iran have increased again, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. Fighting has now continued for several days, disrupting maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz. The latest developments include fresh military strikes, damage to oil tankers amid growing concerns over global energy supplies.

IRGC Reports 'Massive Fires' On Tankers

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday reported “massive fires” on two oil tankers that attempted to pass through the "unsafe southern route" in the Strait after an explosion. According to a statement carried by the IRIB state broadcaster, rescue teams were evacuating the crews of the two vessels. The IRGC urged shipping companies to put the safety of their crews first. It also advised them not to rely on "false information from the US military" and to avoid routes it described as dangerous.

The IRGC added, “It is obvious that as long as America's evils continue in the region, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed and not even a drop of oil, gas, or a package of chemical fertiliser will be exported from the region.” The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency on Tuesday also confirmed that a tanker had been hit by an “unknown projectile” off the coast of Oman.

US Launches Fresh Attacks On Iran

Meanwhile, the United States military said it carried out its 10th straight night of airstrikes on Iran. The attacks were called part of an effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after another American service member was killed and Tehran launched attacks on US allies Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, where the US Navy's 5th Fleet is based.

In a post on X, US Central Command said, “Today at 4 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began a new round of strikes against Iran at the Commander in Chief's direction. The strikes are designed to further degrade Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.” Earlier on Monday, US President Donald Trump warned Iran of a strong response after three American soldiers were killed. He wrote on Truth Social, “Every time Iran kills an American Soldier, they will pay for that killing many times over!”

Iran Minister Travels To Pakistan

Amid the fighting, there were little signs of diplomatic efforts as Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni travelled to Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator, for talks aimed at reducing tensions. Notably, the temporary agreement signed last month to stop fighting has now collapsed.
