San Diego Shooting: A shooting at a mosque in San Diego, California on Monday left three people dead, including a security guard, while the two teenage suspects were also found dead, police said. Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

Suspects Also Found Dead

According to a Reuters report, citing police, two teenage gunmen opened fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County. The attackers killed a mosque security guard and two other men before apparently dying from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The mosque complex also included the Al Rashid School, where children study Arabic, Islamic studies, and the Quran. Police said all children attending the school were safely evacuated after the shooting. Footage aired on television showed children holding hands while being escorted out of the area by authorities.

What Did The Police Say?

San Diego Police Chief ‌Scott Wah said local police and the FBI are treating the attack as a hate crime. However, officials have not yet confirmed an exact motive behind the shooting. Police revealed that the mother of one of the suspects had contacted officers about two hours before the attack. She reported that her son had run away from home with three guns and a vehicle. She also told police that the two teenagers were dressed in camouflage clothing and that her son appeared suicidal.

After receiving the report, police began searching for teenagers and increased security near public places, including a shopping mall and a nearby high school. Shortly afterward, emergency calls came in reporting gunfire at the mosque.

Wahl said police had not received any specific threat against the mosque or other religious places before the attack. However, officers were already monitoring the situation because of concerns about hate speech and the report of armed teenagers.

FBI Investigation Underway

In a post on X, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel said that the agency has taken cognisance of the incident. He wrote, "@FBISanDiego has responded to the scene of the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego this afternoon - all resources will be made available assisting local partners and we will update the public as we’re able."
