Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Wednesday held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed key global issues, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia, the safety of Indian seafarers, and strengthening India-US relations. Both leaders emphasised the importance of stability in the region, with Trump noting efforts toward peace and security while acknowledging the risks faced by maritime workers.

Speaking about India's energy purchases from the US, Trump said India is free to do business with the US in any way it chooses.

Trump also talked about Iran deal, describing the memorandum of understanding as a “very strong” and detailed agreement.

Trump on US-India defence ties
On India-US defence relations, Trump said the partnership between the two countries is “a great relationship.” He added,"I think it is a great relationship...If they were attacked, we would be there to help them...If anybody attacks that man, we are going to be there...If they are attacked and he (PM Modi) is the leader, we are going to be there to help."


Trump says Russia sanctions under review
When asked about the possibility of reimposing sanctions on Russia, Trump said the decision is under consideration and linked it to falling oil price.

Trump calls PM Modi 'Very Tough Negotiator'
Trump further praised PM Modi, calling him a “very tough negotiator” despite his calm appearance. He said Modi is “very tough” in trade discussions, loves both India and the US, and recalled the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston, adding that he plans to visit India in the future.

Trump reaffirms strong US-India ties
Trump said that India has a strong ally in the White House as long as he remains President. "As long as I am President, they (India) have a great friend in the White House...Everyone here loves India and they have tremendous respect for this man," Trump added.


Trump says India will play big role in West Asia
When asked whether he expects India to play a role in West Asia, Trump said he believes India will have a significant role in the region. "Yes, I do. I think India plays a big role in everything. As long as he (PM Narendra Modi) is the leader, India is going to play a big role," Trump said.

Trump Reacts to Death of Indian Seafarers
Trump reacted on the death of Indian seafarers Hormuz, acknowledging the risks faced in the profession. “I heard about that, it is a rough profession. We're working at it,” Trump said.

PM Modi Stresses On Safety Of Indian Seafarers In Hormuz
PM Modi told Trump that freedom of navigation must always be ensured and emphasised its importance. He noted that lakhs of Indian seafarers are on duty across global seas in maritime trade.

"We have always said that freedom of navigation should be ensured and we should also stress upon that. Lakhs of Indian seafarers are om duty in different seas of the world in the sector of maritime trade. I believe that their security is equally important...I am confident that in the deal (with Iran) security of seafarers will be ensured and prioritised," PM Modi said.

PM Modi praises Trump for 'Peace efforts'

PM Modi appreciated Trump’s leadership, saying, “I commend you for your leadership on the progress in peace efforts in West Asia.”
