Despite multiple attempts, no breakthrough has been achieved in the Iran-US talks, raising questions over Pakistan’s role as a mediator. The disappointment began after earlier rounds of peace discussions held in Islamabad in April failed to yield results. Despite hopes for progress, the talks ended without agreement, and a second round of discussions also did not take place as both sides refused to engage in direct negotiations.
Is Pakistan Failing As Mediator?
There was hope that talks would revive after subsequent efforts through indirect communication channels, including the passing of messages between Iran and the US via Pakistan. But it too did not resolve the deadlock, leading to doubts over whether Pakistan’s mediation efforts are failing. Amid this concern, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday said Tehran would welcome any “constructive role” from India in resolving the ongoing conflict.
Speaking to journalists in Delhi during the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, Araghchi said Iran remains committed to diplomacy but has deep mistrust toward Washington. He said, “We have no trust in Americans. This is a fact, and this is the main obstacle in the way of any diplomatic effort.” He added that the US gives “contradictory messages,” sometimes sending different signals within the same day.
Araghchi On Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts
On being asked about Pakistan’s mediation efforts, Araghchi said Islamabad’s mediation efforts in the ongoing indirect negotiations between Iran and the US have not failed but are facing serious challenges due to mistrust and inconsistent messaging from Washington. “The mediation process by Pakistan has not failed yet, but it is in a very difficult course, mostly because of the Americans’ behaviour and the mistrust that exists between us,” Araghchi added.
He also emphasised that talks have reached a “difficult course” over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. He described it as a “very complicated” issue and said both sides are now “almost in a deadlock” on this matter. However, Araghchi added that discussions on this issue may be postponed to later stages.
Speaking further, Araghchi said that there is no military solution to issues related to Iran. “As a matter of fact, there is no military solution to anything related to Iran,” he said, stressing that Tehran will only engage in “real negotiations” if the other side is serious and ready for a fair and balanced deal.
Iran Says India Can Play Constructive Role
While Pakistan’s role remains in question, Araghchi indicated that India can help support peace and dialogue in West Asia. He also praised China’s past diplomatic efforts, especially its role in restoring ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia. He emphasised that Iran attaches “great importance to our relations with India” while appreciating the warm hospitality extended by the Indian government during his visit.
