World-renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja has been confirmed dead after the avalanche on Broad Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan region, his expedition company announced on Saturday. The firm said Purja lost his life in the tragedy and also confirmed that other members of the expedition, including Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa, did not survive.

In a post on Instagram, the frim expressed deep sorrow over the loss and offered condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones. "Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive," the statement read.
Two Other Climbers Also Killed
It also confirmed that other members of the expedition did not survive the disaster. The firm said the tragedy claimed the lives of Purja's trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. "Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy including his trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. Our deepest thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with their families, friends and loved ones. No words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, and we ask that everyone respects their privacy as they grieve," the firm added.

Expedition Firm Pays Tribute
The expedition firm paid tribute to Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, describing him as one of the greatest climbers the world has lost. "The world has lost one of mountaineering's greatest climbers; a leader who inspired millions through his courage, humility and unwavering belief that human potential is far greater than we often imagine," the firm said in its post.
It added that Purja's legacy went beyond his remarkable achievements, as he wanted to show people what was possible when they dreamed bigger, believed in themselves, and refused to accept limitations.
Missing After Avalanche
Ten climbers, including Purja, were reported missing after the avalanche struck on Thursday. A day later, authorities confirmed that four climbers had died, while the status of Purja and five others remained unknown at the time. Rescue teams said four bodies had been recovered despite difficult weather conditions. Three of the deceased climbers were identified as Pur Bahadur Gurung, a Nepali citizen; Nadhira Alharthy, the first Omani woman to climb Mount Everest; and US climber Mallory Geis.
Who Is Nirmal Purja?
Born on 25 July 1983, Purja, popularly known as Nims Dai was a Nepalese mountaineer. He became a global name in mountaineering after achieving a historic feat in 2019. He climbed all 14 of the world's peaks above 8,000 metres in just over six months, breaking the previous record by several years. Before beginning a career as climber, he served in the British Army with the Brigade of Gurkhas and later in the Special Boat Service (SBS), the special forces unit of the Royal Navy.
