US Midterm Elections: All eyes are on the November 3 midterm elections that could have major consequences for US President Donald Trump and his administration. As Trump faces challenges over his low popularity, rising cost of living, immigration crackdown and growing voter dissatisfaction, it would be interesting to see who gains the majority. For Republicans and Democrats, the control of Congress is at stake, however, for countries like India, how the relationship with Washington will move forward remains priority.

The elections will decide whether Republicans retain their majorities or Democrats gain control and become a stronger check on the President’s policies. The results can also affect key areas of India-US relations, including H-1B visas, trade, Russian oil purchases, defence cooperation and energy partnerships. Five ways the result can impact India are as follows:

1. H-1B Visa Rules And Green Cards

Immigration is one of the biggest issues that can be affected by the US midterm election results. As Indian nationals account for around 70 to 75 per cent of H-1B visa holders in the US, any changes to visa rules directly affect Indian professionals. The Trump administration has already proposed a USD 1,00,000 H-1B visa fee, which is currently facing legal challenges from states led by Democrats.

In such a scenario, if Democrats gain control of either chamber of Congress, they can increase scrutiny of these measures and challenge higher visa fees also. However, if Republicans retain control, the administration can gain stronger support for stricter immigration and employment rules in the US.

2. India-US Trade Deal, Tariffs

The election result can also influence ongoing trade negotiations between India and the US to finalise a bilateral trade deal. While New Delhi and Washington have been working towards a trade agreement, uncertainty over tariffs on Indian exports remains a concern. In his second term, Trump has repeatedly threatened steep tariffs, including rates of up to 100 per cent on several countries, including India.

Against this backdrop, if Republicans retain control, it can give Trump flexibility to use tariffs as a tool for negotiations. On the other hand, if Democrats gain a majority, a possibility to review tariff policies remains.

3. Russian Oil Purchases

India's purchases of Russian oil remain another important issue in its relationship with the US. The Trump administration has constantly put pressure on New Delhi over its energy imports from Russia. So, a change in congressional control can influence how closely the US monitors sanctions and considers possible waivers related to India’s Russian oil purchases.

4. Defence And Strategic Cooperation

Over the years, India and the US have been expanding their defence and strategic partnership. However, cooperation in areas such as jet engines, air defence, semiconductors and other advanced technologies require changes to export rules, approvals, and funding. These are the areas where Congress can influence the process through legislation. How it will impact India depends on how Republicans and Democrats view defence ties with New Delhi.

5. Energy And Climate Cooperation

Energy and climate partnerships are another area that may feel the impact of the elections. This is because changes in congressional priorities can influence US funding for clean energy projects, green technology partnerships and joint climate initiatives with India. Considering all these points, how the US midterm elections results unfold remains important to watch.
