Russia-Ukraine War: The Russia-Ukraine conflict which has been ongoing for more than four years shows no signs of easing as Kyiv resumed attacks on Russian oil refineries on Thursday. Similarly, Moscow continues to target Ukrainian energy and logistics infrastructure. The fresh attacks have also increased tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump as both the leaders continue to take swipes at each other.
Ukraine Resumes Strikes On Russian Oil Refineries
According to Reuters, Ukraine attempted to attack heating infrastructure in Russia’s Vladimir region with drones on Thursday. Separately, Ukraine struck an oil refinery owned by Russian state oil company Rosneft in the Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow. Regional Governor Pavel Malkov said a major Ukrainian drone attack had caused a fire at the facility. Meanwhile, Russia struck a logistics facility in Ukraine’s Odesa region.

While the attacked refinery accounts for nearly 5 per cent of Russia’s refining capacity, Russian President Vladimir Putin played down the impact of Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries. He stated that the attacks had caused “nothing particularly significant.” Ukraine’s response reportedly came after Moscow continued missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, including power stations.

Zelenskyy-Trump Feud Deepens
Amid this escalation, Tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy have escalated significantly following a collapsed energy ceasefire and subsequent public cross-accusations. Earlier on Thursday, Trump criticised Ukraine’s renewed attacks on Russian refineries, stating that they were pushing global oil prices higher. “All he's doing is making the world oil price higher. Well, I think that's a disgrace,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax.
He also questioned Zelenskyy’s willingness to negotiate an end to the war, saying, “Zelensky is not a good guy for us to deal with.” Trump added, “They’re not gonna do it with him. He doesn’t wanna settle. He says he wants to settle, but he doesn’t. No, I’m not a big fan of Zelensky. They’ve destroyed that country.” This is significant as Trump has been attempting to mediate and broke ceasefire agreements between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has criticised the US’ approach towards Moscow and expressed concern over the weakening of US support for Ukraine. The Ukrainian President also stated that he feels personally betrayed by Trump. Zelenskyy accused Trump of siding with Russia after more than four years of war. He expressed concern that Ukraine was losing a key partner at a time when it continued to face Russian attacks.

No Clear Progress On Peace Proposals
Also, there is no clear breakthrough on peace efforts involving India, the US, Turkey and Egypt. The four countries have proposed a plan aimed at ending the conflict while supporting formal peace plans, mediation attempts, or summits. However, continued attacks from both sides have raised doubts about whether the efforts can lead to a lasting ceasefire.
