India-Pakistan Navy Ship Collision: Pakistan Navy vessel PNS Hunain is in the spotlight after it was involved in a collision with an Indian Navy frontline warship in the North Arabian Sea on Tuesday evening. The collision was reported around 220 kilometres east of the Oman coast. Following the incident, India summoned the Charge d'Affaires of Pakistan and lodged a strong protest on Wednesday.

What Happened In North Arabian Sea?

According to news agency ANI, citing sources, the incident took place when the Pakistani vessel approached a frontline Indian Navy warship that was carrying out a routine surveillance mission in the North Arabian Sea. The Pakistani naval ship closed in at high speed and manoeuvred in an "unprofessional and unsafe manner", resulting in a collision, sources said. No major damage was reported in the incident.

It was later observed heading towards its own harbour after sustaining damage following a collision with an Indian Naval warship. Reacting to the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “While the incident, which took place in international waters, did not cause any major damage, the conduct of the Pakistani naval ship was in direct contravention of Article 10 of the Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements of April 1991."

1. PNS Hunain (F-273) is a Yarmook-class corvette of the Pakistan Navy. It was built by Damen Shipyards in Galați, Romania, as part of Pakistan's Yarmook-class corvettes. PNS Yarmook, PNS Tabuk, and PNS Yamama are the other vessels of the same class currently with the Pakistan Navy. PNS Hunain was the third vessel to be inducted into service and was commissioned in July 2024.

2. PNS Hunain is designed as multi-role platform for coastal defence and patrol operations. It is named after the Battle of Hunayn, a battle fought during the early Islamic period. According to available information on multiple sites, the vessel combines surveillance and firepower capabilities for maritime security missions in the Arabian Sea and Pakistan's coastal waters.

3. It is said that Islamabad wanted vessels of this class as they combine lower operational costs with sufficient endurance, command facilities, and deck space for diverse contingencies. The Yarmook-class vessels are designed for long-endurance patrols and maritime security duties, while also providing the facilities needed for different operations at sea.

4. The Pakistan Navy has deployed Hunain's sister warships, meaning other vessels of the Yarmook class, on regional maritime security patrols in the Indian Ocean. PNS Hunain can reportedly carry anti-ship missiles and surface-to-air missiles. The Yarmook-class corvette is also equipped with two four-cell Harbah missile launchers. The Harbah system is a surface-to-surface missile capable of anti-ship and land-attack roles.

5. PNS Hunain is also known for the rescue of 18 foreign sailors from the Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Gold Autumn earlier this year. Pakistani sailors joined firefighting missions from Hunain after evacuating the 18 men on board the merchant ship.
