Malaysia Airport Attack: Tada-U International Airport in Myanmar’s Mandalay regions has been closed for two days after it was attacked by six FPV suicide drones. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, briefly disrupting some domestic flights and triggering the closure as a precaution.
Mandalay Airport Shuts Down
According to news agency AFP reports, six drones carrying explosives targeted Tada-U International Airport and nearby areas in Tada-U Township. Security forces detected the drones and used air-defense and counter-drone measures to intercept them before they could cause damage. The explosives carried by the drones were also safely neutralised.
While no people, vehicles, or airport runways were reportedly damaged in the attack, some domestic flights were briefly disrupted. Myanmar Authorities condemned the attack, saying that targeting civilian transport infrastructure could violate international humanitarian law. Security forces have initiated investigation into the incident and are searching for those responsible.
Airport Closure
Following the incident, Myanmar’s second-busiest airport has been closed for two days from Friday, September 11 to September 13, according to security sources who spoke to AFP. “Mandalay airport is closed for today and tomorrow…The attack happened some distance from the airport building, but the airport is closed protectively,” said the source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A second security officer working at another Myanmar airport, also confirmed that the Mandalay facility would be "closed for maintenance" until Sunday. Meanwhile, the military-backed government has accused pro-democracy rebels, mainly the People's Defence Forces (PDF) of carrying out the drone attack. A statement by the government noted the attack was at the airport, which it described as "a non-military, public transportation system".
