Iran-US Tensions: Tensions in the Middle East have soared again as the US and Iran resumed strikes against each other. The latest escalation saw US forces destroy five Iranian crude oil tankers, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched ballistic missile attacks against US navy destroyers and a US military airbase in Jordan.

US Destroys Five Iranian Oil Tankers

US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Tuesday said its forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers. The strikes came after the IRGC targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over a period of 48 hours. It added that the US warship avoided both missile attacks, and no US personnel were injured.

“CENTCOM forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 8, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the past two days. The U.S. warship successfully evaded the attempted Iranian attacks and continued to patrol regional waters. No American personnel were harmed,” the statement read.

Four Tankers Destroyed In Gulf Of Oman

CENTCOM further stated that four of the tankers, including the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco were destroyed in the Gulf of Oman. A fifth tanker, the M/T Derya, was hit near Kharg Island. The US military said its forces gave direct orders to the crews of all five vessels to leave the ships before the strikes.

IRGC Warns Tankers Near Kuwait And Bahrain

Following the US strikes, Iran's IRGC Navy warned oil tanker crews near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to immediately leave their vessels. The warning, carried by Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, applied to ships that were either anchored or docked at the ports.

“We warn all crews aboard oil tankers in the vicinity of ports in Kuwait and Bahrain which host these (American) terrorists and are partners in their hostile actions to immediately leave their vessels, whether they are at anchor or docked at the ports, as the vessels will be targeted” the IRGC said.

Earlier, IRGC said it responded with ballistic missile attacks against a US military airbase, Al-Azraq in Jordan. “In response to the aggressive actions and evil harassment of Iranian oil tankers and ships by the terrorist army of the Great Satan, the powerful aerospace force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps... attacked the DDG-119 and DDG-53 combat destroyers carrying cruise and Aegis missiles with powerful ballistic missiles,” the IRGC statement read.

Jordan Intercepts Iranian Missiles

Meanwhile, missile attacks also triggered air-defence operations in countries across the region as the missiles crossed regional airspace. Jordan later said its air-defence systems destroyed 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran.
