Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Thursday appealed for peace and harmony after three people died in communal violence in parts of the country. In a televised address, Shah said the government would ensure a neutral and transparent investigation into the incidents and take action against those responsible.

PM Balen said, “The Government of Nepal is completely serious and sensitive about the tragic incident that took place in Dewanganj, Siraha and other places in Sunsari a few days ago and the turbulent atmosphere that has arisen in some districts since then. I pay my heartfelt tribute to our citizens Jayaprakash Mehta, Om Prakash Mehta and Ganesh Yadav who passed away in this tragic incident.”

PM Balen Shah Promises Transparent Probe

Shah also paid tribute to the citizens who lost their lives in the violence and expressed condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the Nepal government. He assured that the investigation would be conducted in a “completely fair and transparent” manner. “I also express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the Government of Nepal... The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an investigation committee to conduct a fair investigation into the incident and take strict legal action against the culprits. I would like to assure everyone that this investigation will be completely fair and transparent,” he added.

His remark came after the unrest spread to neighbouring Madhesh Province on Thursday, where a teenager died during clashes at Golbazar market in Siraha district. Officials said one person injured in the Sunsari violence also died in Koshi Province. The violence began on Sunday night in the Kaptangunj area of Devganj Rural Municipality in Sunsari district, Koshi Province, where members of two communities clashed over the use of loudspeakers and the display of religious flags during separately organised programmes.

Curfew Extended

Following the clashes, authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Dhanusha, Siraha and Birgunj districts of Madhesh Province on Thursday. In Sunsari, where restrictions were first imposed on Monday, the curfew remained in place. The local administration on Thursday imposed an indefinite curfew in Janakpur, Dhanusha, from 3:30 pm as a precautionary measure to control the situation.

Security Increased Along India-Nepal Border

Following the imposition of the curfew, security has been tightened along the India-Nepal border. Areas bordering Bihar’s Madhubani are being closely monitored, with increased checks on movement.

Sunsari Incident Sparks Anger

The tension follows an incident in Nepal’s Sunsari district on Sunday, July 26, where allegations of violence against Kanwariyas led to widespread anger. According to police, the violence erupted in the Kaptanganj area of Dewanganj Rural Municipality when members of two religious communities, who were separately organising programmes, clashed over the use of loudspeakers and the display of religious flags.

A verbal altercation between the two groups soon escalated into violence, prompting security personnel to intervene, PTI reported. The forces opened fire during an attempt to bring the situation under control, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old identified as Om Prakash Mehta. Dozens were also wounded in the riots, including security personnel. Located in the southeast of Nepal on the Nepal-India border, Sunsari acts as an important access point to Bihar province and serves as an important transit route between the two nations.
