Iran is set to hold funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the coming days. However, questions remain over whether his son and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has largely stayed out of public view since the US-Israel attacks on Iran, will attend the ceremony.

Will Mojtaba Skip Ayatollah Khamenei’s Funeral?

Amid ongoing preparations, a new report suggests that Mojtaba is unlikely to make a public appearance at his father’s funeral due to serious security concerns. In an interview with India Today, Ayatollah Hakim Elahi, the Supreme Leader’s Representative in India confirmed the development. Elahi said that although Mojtaba wants to appear in public, security agencies have advised against it due to the high risk.

Elahi said, “I was in Iran last week and met some of my friends who met him. They said he wants to come out. He wants to meet people. But security doesn't allow him to come. They said it is very dangerous and we cannot provide security for him. I think he will not come out.” He further mentioned that people from Iran and other countries are gathering for the funeral to show support and respect.

“It is a very, very big loss for them. They think they have lost their spirit, their soul. They believe nothing can replace him…They are coming to show their solidarity and to say that we are with you, we will never forget you and we will follow your path,” he added.

Funeral Schedule

Iranian authorities have announced a detailed schedule for the funeral and related ceremonies. Farewell events for Khamenei will be held on July 4 and 5 in Tehran, followed by a procession on July 6. Further ceremonies will take place in Qom on July 7 and Mashhad on July 9, where he will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine.

Where Is Mojtaba Khamenei?

Reports suggest that Mojtaba has been in hiding since the conflict with Israel, with claims that he was severely injured in a past strike that also killed his family members. He has reportedly only communicated through written messages. However, Iranian officials maintain that he is active behind the scenes, including involvement in diplomatic matters.
