The 14-day temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to expire on April 22. US President Donald Trump has indicated that it is highly unlikely the truce will be extended if a final agreement is not reached before the deadline. On the other hand, Iranian officials have shown mixed signals. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf hinted that the country may not be ready for immediate talks.

Amid growing uncertainty, a senior Pakistani government official on Tuesday, told Reuters that Islamabad is confident it can convince Tehran to attend talks with Washington. The official claimed that Pakistan has received a “positive signal” from Iran and is actively engaging with both sides to bring them to the negotiating table.

With the deadline ending tomorrow, tensions remain high as both sides still appear far apart on key issues. Here's a look back at major demands from the US and Iran to end the war.

What Does Iran Want?

Iran has proposed a 10-point framework for a possible deal, which includes sanctions relief, recognition of Iran’s nuclear rights, and continued control over the Strait of Hormuz. It demands that the US withdraw its troops from all its military bases in the region and insists on continuing its ballistic missile program. Iran also wants acceptance of Uranium enrichment.

Tehran further seeks to retain control over the Strait of Hormuz and a "Non-Aggression Pact" to pre-empt any potential future attacks by the US. Additionally, it demands an end to ongoing hostilities across all fronts, including in Lebanon. It also seeks the removal of all US sanctions, as well as broader international restrictions. Tehran has also demanded reconstruction assistance and reparations for damages incurred during past attacks.

What Does US Demand?

While the exact details of the 15 demands made by the US to Iran are not known, it is believed that Washington largely seeks to curb Tehran’s military and nuclear capabilities. According to a CNN report citing officials, the US has insisted that Tehran completely halt uranium enrichment and relinquish its stockpile of enriched uranium. It also demands that Iran cease its support to allied terrorist groups in the region and allow unrestricted global access through the Strait of Hormuz. The US also intends to maintain its military presence in the region until a stable agreement is reached.

Will 2nd Round Of Talks Yield Result?

Trump has confirmed that US Vice President JD Vance is set to head to Pakistan for the second round of negotiations with Iranian officials on Tuesday. In an interview with Bloomberg, he stressed that the Strait of Hormuz remains key to finalising a peace agreement. “They want me to open it. The Iranians desperately want it opened. I'm not opening it until a deal is signed,” Trump said. As both sides remain divided on key demands, it will be interesting to see whether the talks yield any positive result in easing tensions.
