United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday strongly criticised one of his closest allies, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her position on the Iran conflict. Trump said Meloni lacked courage, highlighting her refusal to fully back US military efforts. The remarks have led to discussion over disagreement between the two leaders, with Iran also mocking the development.
Iran Mocks Trump
Since the outbreak of war on February 28, Iranian embassies around the world have often used social media to mock and criticise Trump for his claims in the conflict. Following the recent spat, the Iranian Embassy in Ghana shared a satirical post that has drawn attention online. In a post on X, the embassy said Italy now has a “vacancy” after losing an ally in Washington and Tehran would like to apply for the position.

The embassy, in its post, also referred to Trump, calling him the “commander in grief” and the “most ‘powerfool’ man on earth.” The message further highlighted how Iran and Italy share a common love for poetry, architecture, and food. The embassy wrote, “Dear Italy, Your PM just defended Pope and lost an ally in Washington — the Commander in Grief, yet the most 'powerfool'man on earth. We'd like to apply for the vacancy.”
“Our qualifications: 7,000 years of civilization, a shared love of poetry, architecture, and food that takes longer to prepare than Trump's attention span. The only thing Iran and Italy have ever fought over is who invented ice cream. Faloodeh came first. Gelato came louder. We've been in a 'cold' war over this for 2,000 years,” the post added.

Trump-Meloni Fallout
In an interview with Corriere, Trump criticised Meloni, saying he was “shocked” by her stance and that he believed she had changed his view of her. He also questioned her position on key global issues. “Meloni doesn’t want to help us with NATO, she doesn’t want to help us get rid of the nuclear weapon…She’s very different from what I thought,” Trump remarked.
Trump’s remark came after Meloni on Monday called out his attacks on Pope Leo XIV as “unacceptable.” The counterremark by the President highlights growing differences between the United States and Italy over the war in Iran. Earlier, there were reports that Italy had refused the use of a military base in Sicily for US operations.
