Amid the United States’ blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has made a significant claim. The Iranian Embassy in India on Wednesday stated that one of its very large crude carrier supertankers, blacklisted by the US successfully traversed international waters and the strait while keeping its tracking system active. The vessel has now reached the Iranian coast without sustaining any damage.

Iranian Supertanker Crosses Hormuz

In a post on X, the Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai announced that the tanker successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and reached the Iranian coast. The post noted that the supertanker, capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels of crude oil sailed openly with its tracking system switched on, traversing international waters without any attempt at concealment.

“An Iranian VLCC supertanker, blacklisted by the U.S., sailed openly with its tracker on, crossed international waters and the Strait of #Hormuz, and reached Iranian shores without concealment,” the embassy wrote.

US Blockade In Hormuz

US President Donald Trump had announced the implementation of a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, following the collapse of peace talks with Iran in Islamabad. He said that any vessels departing from Iranian ports, including those who had paid toll or fee, would be intercepted. According to MarineTraffic data, minutes after the blockade began on Monday, the vessel Rich Starry, which had listed China as its destination, reversed course.

“Effective immediately, the United States navy, the finest in the World, will begin the process of blockading any and all ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz…Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be blown to hell,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that the blockade could cost Tehran up to USD 435 million or Rs 4,081 crore a day for economic damage. However, Iran’s loss depends on several factors, including how impenetrable the US blockade proves to be, and to what extent can Tehran bypass the Strait of Hormuz by rerouting oil exports through the Jask terminal.
