  1. Ambassador Doraiswami rejects India-Pakistan comparison on mediation.

  3. Doraiswami said India and China share similar views on recent crises.

India's Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami on Saturday dismissed comparisons between India and Pakistan over mediation efforts in the ongoing West Asia conflict. He emphasised New Delhi remains committed to contributing to global peace and security, but does not believe mediating in the current crisis would serve its national interests.

Rejects Comparison With Pakistan

Responding to a question from a Chinese journalist about India's global role and Pakistan's attempts to mediate in the Iran-US conflict at the World Peace Forum in Beijing, Doraiswami said comparing the two countries was “unfair.” He said, “I think the comparison, if I might be a little direct, with Pakistan, is a little unfair. I think the economy in the two countries will tell you a lot.”

He said countries should be judged by their overall role in the global system rather than isolated actions. “We should look at countries according to what they are and what they are actually doing in the larger global system," he said, adding that "India's integration with the globe is at a level not matched by most countries".

India Not Looking To Mediate

Doraiswami said India is willing to contribute to broader issues of international peace and security. However, he stressed that mediation is a decision every country must make based on its own interests. "This includes the idea of economic integration with European countries, with Asian countries, our willingness to contribute to larger questions of peace and security," he said.

He added, "We're willing to do all of this. The question about mediation that you're talking about, this is one that, you know, it is for individual countries to decide whether that adds value to their larger national position."

India And China Have Similar Views

He added that India had played such roles in the past but does not see a benefit in doing so now. "We have done our bit of that in the past. I don't see how that, at this point of time and what is already a crowded field, would benefit us in any particular way." Doraiswami further said India and China have taken similar positions on recent international crises, including the conflicts in West Asia and Eastern Europe.

"As far as I see it, our position in recent crises, both in West Asia or even in East Europe, has been quite similar to that of China." He also noted that neither India nor China was actively offering to mediate in these conflicts.
