Efforts to extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran have gained some momentum as mediators continue talks to prevent the temporary agreement from collapsing. The two-week ceasefire, announced by United States President Donald Trump on April 8, is set to expire next week. Both sides are under pressure to keep negotiations going amid growing international calls for peace in the region.
US, Iran Consider Extending Ceasefire
Reports suggest that US and Iran are reportedly considering extending the ceasefire by two weeks to allow more time for negotiations. Mediators are pushing for discussions to resolve major conflict points, especially the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme. The development comes amid heightened tensions following the US military's blockade in the region.
Iranian commander Ali Abdollahi has warned that any continued US blockade could be seen as a breach of the ceasefire, and Iran’s armed forces would not allow exports or imports to continue in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, or the Red Sea.
Have US And Iran Reached ‘In-Principle’ Deal?
According to the news agency Associated Press report, a regional official involved in the talks said that the US and Iran have given an “in principle” agreement to extend the ceasefire to allow more time for diplomacy. However, this has not been officially confirmed by Washington or Tehran. The talks mainly focused on Iran’s nuclear programme, control of the Strait of Hormuz, and compensation for war damage.

Meanwhile, a senior US official told Fox News that the US has not formally agreed to extend the ceasefire. The official added that discussions are still ongoing, and efforts are being made to reach a broader deal. “The United States has not formally agreed to an extension of the ceasefire. There is continued engagement between the US and Iran to reach a deal,” the official said.
Pakistan Delegation Reaches Tehran
At the same time, Pakistan has stepped up its mediation efforts as Army Chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reached Tehran on Wednesday. According to a statement from Pakistan’s military, it is a part of Islamabad’s attempts to help both sides find common ground.
The war between the US, Israel and Iran is in its seventh week and has had a major impact. It has affected global markets, with disruptions in shipping and oil supply due to disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. As the April 22 deadline approaches, mediators are trying to resolve key differences to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.
