Young people across the world are becoming more aware and vocal about their rights, future and demands. From student protests over paper leaks and employment issues in India to youth-led demonstrations against governments in countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya and Serbia, Gen Z movements are emerging as a major force for social and political change.

Gen Z Protests Rise Across Countries

Youth-led protests have been seen in several countries in recent years, with students, young people and professionals taking to the streets over different issues. According to Statista data, between 2024 and 2026, large-scale youth-led protests were reported in at least 10 countries. The reasons behind these movements may differ from country to country, but many share common demands, including better education, employment opportunities, action against corruption, democratic rights and accountable governance.

Countries where Gen Z has played a major role in protests include India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Serbia, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, and Peru.

India’s Youth Movement Over Education And Jobs

In India, students raised their voices over issues such as paper leaks, irregularities in recruitment exams, unemployment and concerns related to the education system. Protests over exams like NEET and other competitive tests have highlighted growing dissatisfaction among students. Notably, social media has played an important role in spreading these movements.

Social Media Becomes Tool For Gen Z Movements

Young protesters are using platforms, hashtags, online campaigns, and digital tools to bring attention to their concerns and connect with people across the country. Gen Z has grown up in the age of the internet and social media. Unlike earlier generations, young people today use digital platforms not just for personal conversations but also to turn issues into public debates.

From online campaigns to peaceful demonstrations, social media has helped youth movements gain wider visibility and organise support. Several issues have pushed young people to protest across the world, including paper leaks and exam irregularities, unemployment and lack of opportunities, corruption and demand for accountability, need for transparency in government institutions, protection of democratic rights, freedom of expression, rising costs and economic challenges.

Experts believe these protests reflect a wider global shift in the way young people engage with politics and society. Across Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, youth are demanding more transparency, better opportunities and responsible governance. The first-time voting generation is no longer limiting its participation to elections but is also seeking a role in shaping policies and holding institutions accountable.

Gen Z’s Growing Voice

Gen Z movements are not just protests, they represent a generation that wants a greater say in decisions affecting their future. With access to smartphones, social media, and greater awareness, young people are increasingly demanding answers from governments and institutions.
