Israel on Saturday carried out fresh strikes in Gaza, killing two Palestinians and damaging buildings near a hospital that stored medical supplies. The strikes came as uncertainty grows over a proposed Gaza peace deal backed by US President Donald Trump, who has said Hamas agreed to disarm as part of a plan to end the conflict.
Two Palestinians Killed In Israeli Strike
According to euters report, citing Palestinian health officials, two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air strike in the Sheikh Radwan area of Gaza City. An Israeli military spokesperson said the strike targeted Hamas militants but did not provide further details. It said the operation was carried out based on information from the Shin Bet intelligence agency.
Hospital Warehouses Destroyed
In a separate strike, two warehouses near the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah were destroyed. The Palestinian health ministry said the warehouses were being used to store essential medical supplies. However, the Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas hideout near the hospital, claiming the group used the location to store weapons. Khalil al-Daqran, a doctor at the hospital, criticised the attack, calling it a “heinous crime.”
Trump Says Hamas Agreed To Disarm
The escalation is significant as Trump on Thursday had announced that Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza have agreed to disarm. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US-led Board of Peace had reached an agreement for Hamas and other armed groups to gradually and completely give up their weapons. He had called it a "critical step" toward lasting peace in the region. He added that Hamas’ disarmament would allow a Palestinian committee to take over governance in Gaza and lead to the withdrawal of Israeli forces under his 20-point peace plan.
Trump's Peace Plan Faces Challenges
Now, the latest strikes have raised questions about the future of the peace agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly commented on the deal, while Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has opposed the agreement and called for continued action against Hamas leaders.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar have welcomed progress on Trump’s peace plan. However, they asserted that lasting peace would require the full withdrawal of Israeli forces and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
