Gyaneshwari Yadav's silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 is the latest chapter in an extraordinary journey that began in a modest gym in Chhattisgarh.

Raised by an electrician father on a limited income, the Rajnandgaon weightlifter has overcome financial struggles, personal sacrifices and years of relentless training to become one of India's brightest stars.

India's weightlifting contingent continued its impressive run at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched the silver medal in the women's 53kg event, adding another podium finish to the country's medal tally in Glasgow. However, the medal is far more than a sporting achievement. Behind every successful lift lies a story of perseverance, family sacrifices and a father who refused to let financial hardship stand in the way of his daughter's dreams.

From An Electrician's Home To The Commonwealth Games Podium

Born and raised in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, Gyaneshwari's sporting journey began at the local Jai Bhavani Vyayamshala, where she accompanied her father, Deepak Yadav, a bodybuilder and electrician.

When Gyaneshwari was studying in Class 7, she started exercising alongside her father. Recognising her interest and determination, Deepak approached coach Ajay Lohar, requesting him to train his daughter in weightlifting. That decision changed her life forever.

A Family That Chose Dreams Over Comfort

Success did not come easily. Deepak earned just ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 a month as an electrician. The income had to support the household, educate two children and cover Gyaneshwari's expensive nutritional requirements, training equipment, shoes and competition expenses.

Despite the financial strain, the family never compromised on her preparation. Instead, they sacrificed their own needs to ensure she could continue chasing her dream.

Every morning, Deepak cycled nearly 8 kilometres from Bhodiya village to Rajnandgaon with his children. After attending school, Gyaneshwari would spend hours training before the family returned home late at night often around 11 pm on the same bicycle. At home, her mother Durga Yadav managed the family despite the constant financial uncertainty.

Deepak has revealed that he often worked up to 20 hours a day, making sure his daughter's diet and training never suffered.

From arranging her passport to funding international trips, he prepared every step believing that perseverance would eventually pay off.

A Career Built On Consistency

Gyaneshwari first caught attention after winning a bronze medal at the 2017 Chhattisgarh State Championship in Durg. The performance convinced her family that she could compete at the highest level.

Her breakthrough came in 2022, when she won the Junior World Weightlifting Championship in Greece before earning admission to the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, one of India's premier training centres.

The following year proved even bigger. She won gold medals in both the junior and senior divisions at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, underlining her rapid rise in world weightlifting.

In recognition of her achievements, the Chhattisgarh Government appointed her as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 2023.

Despite the recognition, the family's struggles have not completely ended. Their house in Rajnandgaon is still under loan, with every family member contributing towards repaying the instalments.

Childhood Sacrifices Behind The Medal

While many children celebrated birthdays and family occasions, Gyaneshwari spent most of her childhood between school and the gym.

According to her father, the family rarely celebrated birthdays or festivals in a grand manner. Friends, outings and social gatherings took a back seat as the barbell became the centre of her life.

That discipline has now transformed her into one of India's most reliable weightlifters on the international circuit.
