Lionel Messi is mourning the loss of his father, Jorge Messi, who has died at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina. According to reports from Argentine media, Jorge passed away at around 10 p.m. on Friday after dealing with a long-term illness.

Jorge had been receiving medical treatment in Rosario. The Messi family had earlier confirmed that he was under medical care but had not revealed details about his illness.

Jorge was much more than Messi’s father. He was also his long-time agent and played an important role in the footballer’s journey from a young boy in Rosario to one of the biggest names in world football.

Jorge Messi’s role in Lionel’s early career

When Messi was a child, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency and needed regular treatment. Jorge took responsibility for making sure his son received the care he needed while Messi was playing in the youth system at Newell’s Old Boys.

When the opportunity came for Messi to move to Spain and pursue his football career, Jorge went with him. Messi eventually joined Barcelona, while his mother, Celia Cuccittini, remained in Rosario with the rest of the family.

Jorge stayed close to his son during those early years in Europe. As Messi's career developed, he also handled many of his off-field responsibilities, including contracts and other business matters.

A father who stayed close to Messi’s career

Jorge was often seen celebrating his son's biggest achievements. He attended important matches and major international tournaments with other members of the Messi family.

He also occasionally shared family pictures and posts about Lionel's football achievements on social media.

Jorge's absence was noticeable during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and their three sons, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro, were present at matches, while Jorge and some other family members were not seen as frequently as they had been at previous tournaments.

For much of Lionel Messi's career, Jorge remained one of the most important people behind the scenes.
