It has been a fascinating FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign for debutants Cape Verde. The Blue Sharks first created history after holding European champions Spain to a draw before producing another memorable 2-2 stalemate against Uruguay, a result that knocked the South American giants out of the competition.
Cape Verde booked their place in the Round of 32 and emerged as one of the biggest surprise packages of the tournament.
However, amid all the celebrations, there is some worrying news for Cape Verde supporters.

Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes, who has inspired his nation throughout the group stage and played a key role in their historic qualification, is currently under police investigation in New Zealand. According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte (ge), a Brazilian woman has accused the veteran footballer of rape. Mendes has not been charged with any offence, and the allegation remains under investigation.
What Happened?
Cape Verde were based in Auckland during their international friendly matches back in March before the FIFA World Cup. According to the report, the alleged incident took place on March 27.
The woman who filed the complaint reportedly worked with the Cape Verde national team as an interpreter and support staff member during the tour. She later lodged a complaint with the New Zealand Police on April 10.
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed against Ryan Mendes, and the allegation has not been proven in court. The investigation remains ongoing.
Investigation Still Going On
According to ge, New Zealand Police have collected hotel surveillance footage as part of the investigation. Authorities are also awaiting the results of forensic examinations before deciding whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges.
The investigation has continued for nearly three months, placing one of Cape Verde's biggest football stars under investigation during the country's breakthrough FIFA World Cup campaign.
The report also stated that the Brazilian woman later sought assistance from officials associated with the Cape Verde Football Federation. Those circumstances are expected to form part of the broader investigation into the handling of the matter.
Ryan Mendes has not publicly responded to the allegation in the reports cited by ge.
Will Ryan Mendes Play Against Argentina?
Cape Verde are set to face defending champions Argentina on July 3 in a historic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash.
At present, neither FIFA nor the Cape Verde Football Federation has announced any disciplinary action against their leader. Since no charges have been filed and no sporting suspension has been imposed, Mendes remains available for selection.
Unless there is a fresh development before the match, Ryan Mendes is expected to feature against Lionel Messi and Argentina as Cape Verde look to script another memorable chapter in their remarkable World Cup journey.
Cape Verde's Historic World Cup Run
From qualifying for their maiden FIFA World Cup to reaching the Round of 32, the Blue Sharks have captured the imagination of football fans across the globe. The small island nation has proved that limited resources and little World Cup experience are no barriers to competing with the biggest footballing nations.
