While teams are fighting for a place in the round of 16, another fascinating contest is unfolding simultaneously: the race for the Adidas Golden Boot.

Some of football's biggest names, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, are making headlines with their goal-scoring prowess. Vini Jr and Dembele have also added their name to the list. With knockout matches remaining, the battle for the tournament's highest scorer is becoming increasingly intense.

Lionel Messi Leads The Golden Boot Race

The spotlight once again belongs to 38-year-old Lionel Messi. The Argentine captain produced a stunning brace against Austria to guide Argentina to a 2-0 victory and, in the process, became the highest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 18 goals overall.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has now scored six goals in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and currently sits at the top of the Golden Boot standings. More importantly, Messi looks far from finished as Argentina continue their march towards the knockout rounds.

Dembele and Vini Jr Joins Mbappe And Haaland

Brazil sensation Vini Jr and Les Blues star Dembele have joined the charts along with Mbappe and Haaland right behind Messi.

Vini Jr scored a sensational brace against Haiti as Brazil topped their group and will play Japan in the round of 32. On the other hand PSG star Dembele grabbed headlines after a phenomenal hattick against Norway. Both these players now have 4 goals and 2 assists on their tally.

Mbappe's goalscoring was put to a halt against Norway after some heroic saves from the opponent keeper.

Mbappe has four goals in the tournament and trails Messi by two goals. Having won the Golden Boot in Qatar 2022, the French forward is once again proving why he is regarded as one of the most dangerous attackers in world football.

Norway's Erling Haaland is matching Mbappe step for step. The Manchester City striker scored twice in Norway's dramatic comeback victory over Senegal, helping his nation secure qualification while moving level with Mbappe on four goals. He was benched by his manager for the knockouts.

What Is The FIFA World Cup Golden Boot?

The Golden Boot is awarded to the highest goalscorer of a FIFA World Cup edition. It is one of the most prestigious individual awards in football and recognises a player's ability to consistently deliver goals on the biggest stage.

Over the years, some of the greatest strikers in football history have won the award, using the tournament as a platform to showcase their finishing ability under immense pressure.

FIFA's Tie-Breaking Criteria

If two or more players finish the tournament level on goals, FIFA uses the following criteria:

1. Most Assists: The player with the higher number of assists is ranked ahead.

2. Fewer Minutes Played: If players remain tied on goals and assists, the award is given to the player who achieved those numbers in fewer minutes on the pitch.

FIFA World Cup Golden Boot Winners List

The Golden Boot has produced some of football's most iconic stories. From Guillermo Stábile's brilliance in the inaugural 1930 tournament to Kylian Mbappe's heroics in Qatar 2022, the award has often belonged to players who defined their respective World Cups.

Scoring goals at the FIFA World Cup requires extraordinary composure, consistency and quality. That is why the list of Golden Boot winners reads like a hall of fame of football's greatest attackers.
