As the whole world tuned in to the round of 32, Canada National football team left it until the very last moments, but Stephen Eustaquio's sensational stoppage-time goal guaranteed Les Rouges booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa.
After 90 minutes of defending, missed chances, and heroic goalkeeping, it took a moment of pure brilliance from the Canadian captain to finally separate the two sides at Los Angeles Stadium. Jesse Marsch's men will now face the winners of the Netherlands vs Morocco clash in Houston, while South Africa's memorable World Cup journey comes to an end. In spite of their hard work and resilience, they failed to withstand the pressure to the end.

South Africa's Resilience
Bafana Bafana once again showed why they had become one of the tournament's surprise elements. Hugo Broos' side matched Canada for long spells and threatened repeatedly during the opening half, only to be denied by poor finishing and determined defending. On the other hand, the defenders and goalkeeper of the South Africa National Football team put their bodies on the line as they defended their goal.
South Africa almost struck first before Canada responded with two huge opportunities of their own. Aubrey Modiba brilliantly cleared Moise Bombito's header off the goal-line before captain Ronwen Williams produced a stunning reflex save to deny Tajon Buchanan from point-blank range, keeping the scores level heading into the break.
Canada gradually began to dictate proceedings after the restart. They started dominating the midfield and the momentum was completely shidted. Ronwen continued to frustrate Les Rouges with some spectacular saves. First, he blocked Tani Oluwaseyi's powerful effort before Mbekezeli Mbokazi reacted quickly to clear the rebound away from danger.
As the game drifted towards extra time, Jesse Marsch introduced Alphonso Davies on the 75th minute mark, whose pace immediately stretched the South African defence and lifted the Canadian supporters inside the stadium.
Late Winner for Canada
With extra-time slowly approaching, a bouncing clearance fell on the foot of Stephen Eustaquio just outside the penalty area in the second minute of stoppage time. The midfielder timed it perfectly with his first touch and placed it into the bottom corner beyond Ronwen Williams to set the Canadians on fire. "We worked a lot to get this victory. We really wanted to give this win to all the Canadians. We just kept believing and kept pushing. It was an amazing goal, but when I shot, I felt everyone shot with me.
Everybody put a little bit of power on it, and it went to the back of the net, so I'm very happy." Eustaquio said. The home crowd was delighted and started celebrating the winning goal.
The midfielder also sent a warning to Canada's potential Round of 16 opponents, insisting Les Rouges are ready for any challenge. "We will try to make Morocco and the Netherlands see our game and feel, if they go through, they're going to get the hardest game they're going to face in this World Cup. I think we did an amazing job, and it's going to be an amazing game next week," he added.
Bafana Bafana reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.
Despite the heartbreak, Hugo Broos' men leave North America with some flamboyant football that entertained the entire football fraternity.
